SEQUIM — The Museum and Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley — MAC — has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Funds will be used to improve collection storage for the hundreds of uniforms, hats, quilts and other textiles in the MAC’s collection.
The MAC also plans to hold a free textile conservation workshop to help other museums and local groups that have historic textiles.
The grant will help purchase supplies, build storage racks and pay for a museum collection consultant to hold the workshop in Sequim.
“This was a national grant and the museum and Arts Center competed against very large museums for the funds,” said Katherine Vollenweider, the MAC’s executive director and writer of the grant.
“Other recipients included the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum and the National Aquarium in Baltimore.”
Applying for this grant was a direct result of the MAC participating in the Connecting to Collections National Initiative and learning how millions of artifacts in collections nationwide are at risk.
Vollenweider was selected as the Washington state representative for the Connecting to Collections National Conservation Summit several years ago.
“The focus on conservation at the national level has raised awareness for small museums and their staff to improve collection storage and handling,” Vollenweider said.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.
