"Palo Alto Barn Road" by Janet and LeRoy Beers will be one of the works of art on display during First Friday Art Walk Sequim.
There are many ways to discover the beauty of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.
Taking in the natural beauty of the area by walking through the quaint downtown is a favorite pastime of area tourists.
Wandering through the galleries and shops that
feature local art is another.
First Friday Art Walk Sequim combines both of these discovery methods and encourages locals to explore their town through the eyes of its artists.
“Our mission is to create approachable and
accessible art and cultural venues that encourage the community to connect and celebrate expression and diversity,” said Renne Emiko Brock-Richmond, who coordinates the walk each month.
The free, self-guided art walk happens on the first Friday of each month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at a
variety of art galleries, the Museum & Arts Center,
artists’ studios and other venues.
“Each month we have amazing local artists showing their work,” Brock-Richmond said.
“We encourage artists from all mediums and
experience levels to participate in the art walk.”
“Any artist who wants to show their work should feel free to approach any of the venue owners or managers.”
Brock-Richmond said one of the most impressive elements of the art walk is the diversity of artists the general public can be exposed to in one evening.
For example, the Feb. 5 walk will feature painters, sculptors, basket weavers, wood carvers,
photographers, dancers and fiber artists.
The Museum & Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., will feature an exhibit of wood carvings by Gordon Day, cedar bark basketry by Marlien K. Hennen, bone carving by Victor Judd and the traveling exhibit, “Fast Moving Water” with photos by Keith Lazelle.
“The museum will also feature artist demonstrations during the art walk,” Brock-Richmond said.
“People will have the chance to see firsthand how these artists create the extraordinary pieces on display at the museum.”
Other highlights of the Feb. 5 event include the exhibit “We Love Sequim” at The Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.
During the art walk, people who visit the gallery will have a chance to meet many of the artists with work on display.
The art walk celebrated its third anniversary in October 2009.
“We hope the walk will continue to grow to include more artists and that the public will continue to enjoy the activities we plan,” Brock-Richmond said.
