SEQUIM — The natural beauty of the North Olympic Peninsula will provide the perfect setting for Art in the Park, a five-day event, held Friday, Aug. 13 through Tuesday, Aug. 17.
The event will feature a multi-media exhibit in the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, as well as special art activities, demonstrations and evening presentations on bats and moths in Railroad Bridge Park on Aug. 14-15.
“Art in the Park lets us see and experience the many ways nature inspires art,” said Shirley Anderson, co-chair of the River Center’s Education and Outreach Committee.
An Art in the Park reception and open house will be held at the River Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.
More than 20 local artists and photographers are participating in the exhibit. Their works range from painting to pottery and block printing to driftwood sculpture.
All of the art in the exhibit will be for sale, and artists will donate a portion of the sale price to the River Center.
In addition to the Friday evening reception, the exhibit in the River Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, through Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Artists, including jewelry makers, driftwood sculptors, block printers, painters and basket makers, will be working and selling their art outdoors in Railroad Bridge Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15.
Art activities for children, a new addition this year, will take place in the amphitheater.
Two special evening events will also take place in Railroad Bridge Park during the weekend — “Bats Beside the Dungeness” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, and a “Moth Hunt” at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15.
During “Bats Beside the Dungeness,” River Center Director Bob Boekelheide will give a presentation about bats and then lead participants to Railroad Bridge, where they will search for bats in the sky over the river as the sun sets.
During “Moth Hunt,” Bill Parker, a student of natural history, will discuss the secrets of moths and try to attract a variety of moths for viewing.
People participating in either evening event should bring flashlights and dress for an evening stroll.
People interested in attending either event will meet at the event start times in the amphitheater in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.
A $5 donation per person, per event is requested to help support River Center programs; students younger than 18 are free.
